For almost 60 years, the Hampstead Antique & Craft Emporium has been called home to around 25 locally based small shops and stalls that are much loved across our community.
The market not only provides locals a centre to meet, but also attracts tourists from around the world. In a village that is slowly being taken over by the modern world, the Hampstead Antique & Craft Emporium preserves an old-world charm that makes Hampstead so special.
Sadly, during Covid the market was refused support from Camden Council. Camden Conservatives lobbied for this, but it was refused. However, Camden did allocate available funds to the markets in Camden Town and Hatton Garden. Camden Labour once again refused to support Hampstead businesses.
The owners want to close the Emporium – will this end up in the valuable site being developed as more flats? The only way to prevent this happening is for it to be protected as an Asset of Community Value.
Camden can grant this protect premises that promotes the welfare and interests of our local community. It restricts the ability of the owner to dispose of a property and may also affect the planning position. The White Bear is a great local example of this.
