We are very pleased to announce that the international seminar entitled “Protecting the Past for the Future: Digital Documentation as One of the Imperative Tools for Safeguarding of Cultural Heritage” will take place on 20 July 2019 (Saturday) in the Lecture Room No.1 of the National Museum of Korea, Seoul, jointly held by the Digital Heritage Lab, Graduate School of Culture Technology, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST, Prof. Jaehong Ahn) and the International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region under the auspicious of UNESCO (ICHCAP, Director-General Mr. Gi Hyung Keum), in close cooperation with ICOMOS CIPA Heritage Documentation.

In tandem with the continual development of digital heritage documentation which stems from directional/official policies of the government of the Republic of Korea, the heritage community both locally and nationally has focused greater attention on the potential applications of digital technologies. In light of this, on the occasion of the 6th ICOMOS CIPA Summer School to be held in Gyeongju, Republic of Korea from 14 to 19 July 2019, in close collaboration with Digital Heritage Lab (KAIST), the above- mentioned seminar has been organized as a post programme. This post-progamme could serve as an excellent opportunity for the participants to (re)discover key concepts and roles of digital documentation technologies in the preservation of both tangible & intangible heritage. It could also provide participants a better understanding of current international practices in the field of digital heritage documentation as well as contribute to establishing a professional network dedicated to information exchange and training among heritage professionals.

 The above-seminar will cover the following domains:  
- Key concepts and methodologies in relation to various technologies: 3D laser scanning, photogrammetry, and others used in the preservation of cultural heritage;
- International principles and guidelines for digital heritage documentation and the relevant issue of standardization;
- Innovative application of the digital technologies in visualization and archiving of intangible heritage;
- Current practices on digital heritage documentation and the development of relevant policies in Korea.

[국문 간략 소개]
오는 7월 20일(토), 유네스코아태무형유산센터(사무총장 금기형, 이하 '아태센터')는 카이스트 문화기술대학원 디지털헤리티지랩(책임교수 안재홍)과 함께 국립중앙박물관에서 '미래를 향한 과거 - 문화유산 보존을 위한 필수 도구로서 디지털 기록화'라는 주제로 국제 세미나를 개최한다. 동 세미나는 ‘무형유산의 아카이빙 및 시각화’, ‘유형유산의 디지털 기록화와 관련 기술’, 및 ‘문화유산의 기록화 분야의 대한민국의 노력과 도전’ 등 총 세 개의 세션으로 진행되며, 각 세션은 전문가 발표와 토론으로 구성된다. 문화유산 기록화 관련 최신 기술의 국제 적용 동향과 유럽과 국내의 실제 활용 모범사례를 살펴볼 수 있다. 유형과 무형유산 기록화 분야에서 명망 있는 전문가가 연사로 나서, 유무형의 통합적 보호 가능성을 탐색할 기회가 될 것이다. 이번 세미나를 통해 국내외 문화유산 디지털 기록화 분야의 경험과 전문성을 공유함으로써, 향후 디지털 기록화 분야에서 국내외의 공동 협력을 이끌어 낼 수 있는 초석을 다지는 데 기여할 것으로 기대한다. 동 세미나는 경주에서 개최(7.14.~19.)되는 '제6차 이코모스 CIPA 국제서머스쿨'의 특별 프로그램으로 기획되었다.
