Open Letter: Belgian Data Retention Legislation
The Internet Society has developed a sign-on letter against Belgian the Data Retention Legislation. The Legislation, or "the Draft law on the collection and storage of identification, traffic and location data in the electronic communications sector and their access by the authorities,“ would require operators of encrypted systems to enable law enforcement to access the future content from specific users on request. This means that businesses will be forced to implement encryption backdoors into their systems on request by Belgian law enforcement.

We are gathering signatures from security experts, civil society, trade associations, and companies to highlight the technical community's concerns with the legislation. The legislation could be introduced into the Belgian legislature as soon as early October, so there is a need to act fast.

Deadline for comments on the draft is Wednesday, 22 September.
Deadline for signatures is close of business on Thursday, 30 September.

Please fill out the form below if you would like to sign on to the letter. If you have any questions, please contact David Frautschy at frautschy@isoc.org.
