QLC: COMBAT ARTS (QLCCA)
Capoeira is a martial art rooted in a need for celebration as well as survival. As with many Afro practices, the material is taught in rhythm - thus actively engaging all senses. The Afro culture is very much utilitarian in this sense - as there always exists a multiplicity in each aspect of the content. We see examples of this multiplicity when examining how essential musicianship is in Capoeira.
Our music not only celebrates our Ancestors, hometowns or neighborhoods - it also dictates HOW we train. The intensity, speed, style and expression of training are all determined by the context of the music and which themes the songs represent. IF self-defense is trained to a rhythm, it LOOKS a lot like a celebration - because it is - all the while forging enhanced neurological pathways to make our techniques instinctual.
Capoeira is so very unique in many ways. It's philosophy dances on the line of innocent recreation and deceptive combat strategies. The contradictions of life are often emphasized and utilized in the discussion of Capoeira which is a nod to the application of higher spiritual principles. This ambidextrous nature breeds a wild amount of agility, diversity and unpredictability. In fact, the athleticism of Capoeiristas is unprecedented - which makes it the perfect tool for cross-training all forms of fitness. From everyday parents to athletes to law enforcement - everyone can benefit from Capoeira. There are no shortage of reputable fighters and organizations that attest to the same sentiments.
However,
It is EXTREMELY important to stress that this art was HIGHLY illegal and punishable to the MOST heinous extents imaginable. So much so - that the art was nearly extinct at times.
When observing the parallels between Capoeira and Guerilla Warfare, it becomes easier to ascertain WHY the government was wary - the Military, Mobs and Gangs employed Capoeristas as Enforcement.
Furthermore, Capoeira requires a complete academic curriculum that can be dispersed orally. Imagine all the effort this entails. One must be adept in socio-political arenas, spiritually developed in ceremonial procedures, and musically capable of delivering performance. Being an expert in acrobatics, athleticism, history, politics, philosophy and combat, Mestres (Masters of Capoeira) easily dedicate 30-40 years of study to accomplish these standards.
That being said, it is an utter privilege to practice this art in the open with our friends and family. Since it is so important to be capable of protecting our loved ones -
We created OUR curriculum to accent the areas of Capoeira that our ancestors needed to address: a striking art that was spiritually rich enough for recreation while understanding grappling and weaponry.
Every month we invite a PROFESSIONAL to educate, share skills and cross-train.
