Award Criteria for those who will be acknowledged at the Maryland Awards, in-person fall event

Hall of Fame:

Honors a UMCP alumnus/a who has received state, national or global fame for their significant, positive impact on society. This award is presented to our most notable alumni who instill Maryland pride and reflect the core values of the university. *President Pines will select the award recipient.

Presidents Award:

The second highest award bestowed to alumni by the university. Honors an alumn who has achieved state or national recognition for excellence in his/her profession or field, This award is presented to our most noteworthy alumni who excel in their field. *President Pines will select the award recipient.

Outstanding Recent Graduate:

Honors an alum who has completed their undergraduate degree within the last 10 years and has distinguished themselves personally and professionally. This award is presented to an accomplished alumn who is on the rise. *The Awards and Recognition Committee will select the award recipient.

Spirit of Maryland:

Honors an alum or community member who reflects the best of the Terp spirit. This award celebrates those who embody and inspire Maryland pride through their service to the university and/or state of Maryland. This is the only award that non-UMCP alumni are eligible to receive. *The Awards and Recognition Committee will select the award recipient.

Tyser Gottwalls Service Award:

Honors an alum who has demonstrated outstanding service to the university, gifting their time and/or talents to support their alma mater. This award is named for Ralph J. Tyser ’40 and Abram Z. Gottwals. *The Awards and Recognition Committee will select the award recipient.

Elaine Johnson Coates Award:

Honors an alum who has made a significant and sustained contribution to advance TerrapinStrong principles and foster diversity and inclusion nationally and/or globally. This award is named for Elaine Johnson Coates ’59, the first afterican american graduate of the University of Maryland, who was also the inaugural recipient. *The Awards and Recognition Committee will select the award recipient.

Do Good Award:

Honors an alum who exemplifies the spirit of Do Good through extraordinary service and a sustained commitment to making a meaningful, positive impact in their community. This award recognizes individuals whose leadership, volunteerism, and dedication inspire others and reflect the University of Maryland's mission of service and social responsibility. *The Awards and Recognition Committee will select the award recipient.
