Tappin Roots (TR) is an environmental internship program for Black and Brown identified high school students in the Greater Beaumont area. Tappin Roots was created by and is comprised of a collaborative group of Black and Indigenous lead organizations.
Tappin Roots uses storytelling, mentorship, career exploration, place-based learning, and healing practices to train and empower the next generation of environmental leaders who can connect Black Texans closer to nature, and closer to their cultural history.
Details:
- TR is a required to 8 month program from November 2024-June 2025.
- Up to 10 Interns will be selected
- Interns and Parents/Guardians are required to attend orientation to complete program paperwork, establish expectations, program schedule, and community agreements.
- Interns will participate in monthly career and environmental justice symposiums led by professionals of color.
- Learning opportunities include oral tradition practices, Financial Literacy, and Texas' Black history to educate others about the natural world
- Interns will participate in summer nature-based education work with one of the partnering organizations.
- Each Intern is eligible to receive a up to a $4,000 total stipend
