Intercultural Enrichment Stipend

The Global Engagement Office (GEO) recently introduced a new pathway to financial support for activities that could enrich your study abroad experience. Limited funding is available for modest Intercultural Enrichment stipends. Proposals will be considered on a competitive basis.

Funding for intercultural enrichment is limited and each proposal will be considered on its own merits.  Success of a past proposal for a cultural/educational activity does not guarantee future funding for the same activity.

Students are eligible to request support for a proposed future activity OR for retroactive support of an experience they have already undertaken.  However, funding can NOT be guaranteed

SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • Successful proposals will address how this activity will contribute to your growth in relation to core intercultural competencies as identified below.
  • Preference will be given to students who do not have access to program-funded cultural experiences.
  • Funding is intended to support intercultural learning in the country(s) where you are studying.
  • AI tools should not be relied upon. Proposals should feature a student's authentic voice; if this is missing from your narrative, GEO may need to schedule a meeting to better understand your goals(s) in real-time.

DETAILS:

  • Funding amounts will vary based on both volume and suitability of requests.
  • Maximum stipend is $600
  • Limit of one stipend per student

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Before the end of their term, students will be required to submit a short written reflection on the value/impact of their experience.

List of Core Intercultural Competencies for Question 7

Please read through the below list of core intercultural competencies. In your response to question #7, reflect on how your proposed activity fits into one of these categories.

Perspective-Taking on Difference
Appreciating perspectives that are different from your own and unpacking
 influences on your own perspective.
(examples: activities that explore stereotypes or that put you outside your comfort zone)

Intercultural Communication
Listening to and communicating effectively with diverse populations by applying appropriate verbal/nonverbal behavior.
(examples: activities that expose you to cultural norms; workshops that teach non-verbal cues like gestures, tones, and inferred meanings; participation in a club or society, etc.)

Linguistic Competence
Cultivating multilingualism for cross-cultural comprehension.
(example: language instruction)

Cross-Cultural Collaboration
Building meaningful relationships with culturally diverse peers, even in contexts where language fluency varies within a group.
(examples: sports teams, group projects, theatre production, cooking classes, art workshops, etc.)

Cultural Appreciation
Seeking out knowledge from people whose culture, environment, and history is different from your own.
(examples: historical sites, exploring the arts, etc.)

7. Leveraging Intercultural Growth Opportunities
Beyond the intrinsic value of the experience itself, how will you use this opportunity to meet one of the core intercultural goals above?
