Across the city and country we're hearing accounts of landlords putting a squeeze on vulnerable tenants. We have been forced out of work with insufficient government protections and backed against a wall as landlords continue to demand rent.
Multiple organizations are calling for rent strikes across the country in early April and the continental Autonomous Tenants Union Network is preparing tenants for a continental tenant action in May 2020.
We cannot sit idly by. We shall join with fellow tenants who are asking us to help them connect with other tenants to defend their housing and lives.
We remember what the government has done to us during crises: reward the rich and damn the have-nots. This happened in the last official housing crisis, in New Orleans after Katrina, and countless other emergencies transformed into opportunities for the ruling class. Remember all the bank bailouts? The rewards to developers? The "undesirables" driven out? The lives and dreams ruined and taken? The suicide statistics that banks kept of the people they made homeless?

We do consider banks to be landlords, too. And we shall attempt to connect working-class "homeowners" who are not landlords themselves, who don't use their small privilege to exploit others.
