Bronx Community Board 9 - Community Visioning Survey
Bronx Community Board 9 recently initiated a Long-Term Planning Program. Through community engagement (such as our Community Visioning Series) as well as neighborhood-based research on the existing conditions of our communities, the Board is pursuing different methods of community-based planning to encourage improvements and investments to our District.

Getting feedback and ideas directly from our residents and local business owners is the most important part of this Program. This survey provides an opportunity for you to share with us your both your dreams and concerns for our communities. This survey is confidential, so please feel free to be direct and honest. The answers you provide will be reviewed by Community Board staff and researchers working on this program with us, and used to inform planning decisions the Board makes in the future. We will NEVER share any personal or contact information (your name, email, address, etc) that you disclose in this survey.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer this survey. Your feedback is incredibly valuable to the planning process. Please do not forget to provide your email address below so we can continue to inform you on our Long-Term Planning activities, including progress reports and future events. You can contact the Board office at bx09@cb.nyc.gov or 718.823.3034 with any questions you have about this survey or the Long-Term Planning Program in general.

2. COMMUNITY VISIONING EXERCISE
The follow sections provide an opportunity for you to share with the Board your thoughts on the current and future state of our District, regarding five issues we believe are central to a creating a good quality of life in our neighborhoods through urban planning and development.

The five issues we have identified are:

A. Waterfront, open spaces, and the local environment
B. Housing
C. Local businesses, commercial spaces, and employment
D. Transportation
E. Our community as a whole

Each section contains a description of the issue, and the same three questions to answer in relation to each topic:

1. What do you want to preserve?
2. What do you want to create?
3. What do you want to change?

The purpose of this exercise is for us to find out what you value in our communities, your ideas about how to improve our communities, and what anything you believe are cause for concern in our District. You can answer in full sentences or bullet points - whatever makes sense to you.
A. Waterfront, open spaces, and the local environment
Bronx Community District 9 has 10 miles of waterfront (along the Bronx River, the East River, and Westchester Creek) and hundreds of acres of open space (including Soundview Park, Pugsley Creek Park, and Starlight Park).

Some of these spaces are well maintained and used by our community, and yet others are polluted, overgrown, or ignored. Being close to water bodies means that our community has many opportunities for water-based recreation and transportation, but can also make us vulnerable to flooding and expose us to water-based pollution. The quality of these green spaces can have a big impact on the quality of life for the residents in our community!

How do you feel about the waterfronts, open spaces, and local environment in our District? Thinking towards the future, what would you like to preserve, create, and change about these elements of the community?
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO PRESERVE? *
Not sure? Try these questions instead: (A) What parts of the waterfront or parks in our District you like to visit? (B) Why do you value these places?
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO CREATE? *
Not sure? Try these questions instead: (A) Can you think of parks or open spaces in other parts of the city that you wish you had in your community? (B) What is it about these places that you like so much?
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO CHANGE? *
Not sure? Try this question instead: If you could snap your fingers and change one thing about the closest park to your house or workplace, what would it be?
Additional thoughts / comments:
B. Housing
Bronx Community District 9 has every kind of home: from single family houses to apartment buildings, and from public housing to luxury developments.

The District is also home to many types of residents: families; seniors; singles; students; immigrants; diverse cultural and ethnic groups; long-time community members and newcomers; and households at every income level. All of these residents have different housing needs. With a growing population in our District, housing supply is a big issue!

How do you feel about the housing supply in our District? Thinking towards the future, what would you like to preserve, create, and change about the housing market and housing supply in our communities?
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO PRESERVE? *
Not sure? Try this question instead: If you could pick any neighborhood in the District to live in, which one would it be, and why?
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO CREATE? *

Additional thoughts / comments:
C. Local businesses, commercial spaces, and employment
Bronx Community District 9 contains many different types of land use - residential districts, commercial districts, and two manufacturing / industrial districts along the Bronx River and Westchester Creek.

While many of our commercial areas are active and busy (Westchester Avenue, Castle Hill Avenue, and Metropolitan Avenue), our manufacturing areas have declined over the years. These dynamics determine the types of jobs that are available in the District, and also the amenities and retail offerings residents have access to.

How do you feel about the business environment, commercial spaces, and employment opportunities in our District? Thinking towards the future, what would you like to preserve, create, and change about the commercial and employment markets in our community?
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO PRESERVE? *

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO CHANGE? *
Not sure? Try these questions instead: (A) Do you think it is easy to find a job in this neighborhood? (B) Are there many desirable places to work in the area?
Additional thoughts / comments:
D. Transportation
Bronx Community District 9 has a population of almost 200,000 residents within 5.5 square miles who all need to get around! The District is served by 5 stops on the 6 train and many bus lines. In addition to public transportation, many residents and workers in the district travel by car, walking, and bicycle. The District contains several highways - many of which are very congested - as well as some beautiful new bike trails in some of our parks.

How do you feel about the quality and access to all modes of transportation in our District? Thinking towards the future, what would you like to preserve, create, and change about the transportation options in our community?
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO PRESERVE? *
Not sure? Try these questions instead: (A) How do you get to and from work or places you need to go? (B) What is the most convenient route or transportation for your needs?

Not sure? Try this question instead: What areas in the District or surrounding areas do you find the hardest to get to, and why?
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO CHANGE? *
Not sure? Try these questions instead: (A) If you were a transportation planner, what revisions would you make to some of the local transit routes? (B) Are there any areas in the neighborhood that are over-served or under-served by transit options?
Additional thoughts / comments:
E. Our community as whole: "The New Bronx"
Bronx Community District 9 - and the entire borough of the Bronx as a whole - has experienced many changes over the last several decades. Growth and decline has shaped our communities, and many feel more change is coming.

Many of us have probably heard the Bronx Borough President, other elected officials, and the news refer to a “New Bronx” developing around us. This idea may refer to new building and developments, new investments and amenities, and new residents coming to the District. It can also mean change from the things we know.

How do you feel about the idea that a ‘New Bronx’ is coming? Thinking towards the future, what would you like to preserve, create, and change about our community as a whole?
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO PRESERVE? *
Not sure? Try these questions instead: (A) What is your favorite part about living in your community? (B) What makes you want to live here as opposed to other places in the city?
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO CREATE? *
Not sure? Try this question instead: Think of a neighborhood somewhere else in the city you would like to live in... What makes it different than this one?
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO CHANGE? *
Not sure? Try these questions instead: (A) We have all seen many parts of the Bronx change in the past few years - what changes are you most happy about? (B) Have you seen anything happen in other neighborhoods that you wish would come to your community?
