If you are entering grades 4 to 8 (9 to 14 years old) in September and interested in learning about what it's like to participate on a FIRST LEGO League (FLL) team or if you are already on a team and would like to get more experience building robots and using the EV3 software, sign up for this camp. Experience is not required. The camp runs from 9 am to 3 pm, August 6th - 10th at the CMU/Girls of Steel practice field at NREC 10 40th St. Pittsburgh PA 15201. Our volunteer mentors and assistants are members of the Girls of Steel FIRST robotics program at Carnegie Mellon University.
To be eligible for the camp, you must be going into grades 4 to 8 in September 2018. Please go to this website <http://www.firstlegoleague.org/challenge/participationrules> for more details about FLL team participation rules if you are curious about joining an FLL team after the camp.
For the short answers, formatting notes are provided below. For the long answers at the bottom, it is okay if your answer is “None” or “Not applicable.” This will not give you any disadvantage. We just would like to see a previous interest in aspects of our program. The students applying must be the ones to answer these questions.
A goal of the Girls of Steel program is to close the gap in gender inequality within STEM fields which means the gender balance at the camp will be at least 50% girls. There is a $150 fee payable* upon acceptance that will go toward materials and other camp expenses. Financial assistance is available if the student is eligible for free or reduced price lunch at their school.. Please provide documentation from your school upon acceptance into the camp.
