Within this year’s CoLaboratory program, new artistic work, interdisciplinary research, intercultural dialogue and innovative thinking processes are to be explored and promoted again.
> HOW WILL THE RESIDENCY TAKE PLACE?
The collaboration will take place exclusively online. The main communication language will be English.
> WHAT ARE THE PROJECT STAGES?
NEW Registration deadline: May 25, 2022
NEW Project duration: May 30 – July 31, 2022
> UNREST
After more than two years of isolation and social distancing, the world is now pendulating between slow rejuvenation and turmoil due to continuous socio-political unrest, change, political restlessness and displacement. Larger and larger groups of people are struggling with integration, acceptance, de-naturalization or forced migration. Others aim for acceptance, assimilation and struggle to integrate constant changes within their own groups. What are the current struggles that we are facing, in what ways can they be quantified, and how can we open and entertain conversations about such difficult and ever-shifting topics?
We invite artists and researchers to explore the theme of UNREST and to reflect on current, past and future shifts within these complex dynamics. The aim is to create new media artworks that are inspired by scientific data and explore the boundaries between the spheres of art, science, and technology.
The goal of the project is to create a dialogue platform for the participants in Romania, Ukraine, The Republic of Moldova and Germany, as well as to stimulate co-creation and cooperation. Within the interdisciplinary residency program CoLaboratory 3.0, we will bring together 10 participants from four countries and pair them in tandems, each consisting of one artist and one researcher from Romania, Moldova, Ukraine or Germany. The pairs will work together for at least one month in order to create a work of digital art combining various forms of artistic expression and research results
> WHY FIVE PAIRS?
Each of the five German cultural organisations in Romania and the Republic of Moldova, which are the project’s initiators, will facilitate one residency (some of them along with a local partner). The pairs will each include an artist and a researcher from Brașov, Bucharest, Chișinău, Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu, and from Germany and/or Ukraine.
> WHO ARE THE PROJECT PARTNERS?
Some German cultural organisations invited a local partner from the visual arts sector, together with whom they will organise the residencies. The role of the partners is to provide a platform or a context for bringing the resulting creations in front of the public.
The partners of the artistic residencies are:
● RADAR New Media Art | Bucharest
● Clujotronic - Electro Arts Festival | Cluj-Napoca
● NAG | Sibiu
> WHO MAY APPLY?
We have set out to bring together artists from the field of New Media and researchers that work with data analysis in all its forms. We are interested in harbouring projects which deal with macro- and micro-stories, longitudinal studies, interviews and data collected in various forms and about various topics. The project is therefore open to all interested artists, early career researchers and students from the following fields:
● NEW MEDIA ARTS: digital visual artists, computer animation creators, interaction artists, video game developers, etc.
● DATA ANALYSIS AND SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH: big and small-scale data researchers, public database analysts, social scientists, statisticians - researchers in any of the fields of history, medicine, economics, cybernetics, etc. that rely on quantitative data for their work.
Artists and researchers from each country – Germany, Moldova and Romania – can apply for either of the working fields suggested. We also welcome applications from Ukrainian artists or researchers who would like to get involved in this dialogue. Later, mixed teams of two people will be formed, each representing one of the domains (artist/researcher). A jury consisting of representatives of the German cultural centres and their partner institutions will select the participants and pair them into tandems.
> WHAT DOES THE PROJECT OFFER?
Each selected participant will receive a creation scholarship worth 500 euros and close support offered by the project team. In addition, 400 euros in production costs per team are provided for creation and showcasing of the resulting artworks of each working team. The artworks will be shown in the respective city of its funding German cultural organisation in association with their partner festival, gallery or art space. In addition, a "light" version of the artwork will go on tour: simplified versions of the artwork in the form of video loops will be shown in all other participating cities at the respective festivals / galleries/ events.
