The Mayor's Internship Program with the City of Philadelphia is an opportunity for current college undergraduates and graduate students to learn about and contribute to the city government that manages operations for the nation's 6th largest municipality. We host the best and brightest students from around the nation to come to Philadelphia every summer and see all our great city has to offer.
The Mayor's Internship Program is a ten-week, unpaid internship beginning in early June and ending in mid August. The internship consists of three main components: a department internship, "Exploring Government" activities every Friday, and a group project.
Mayor's Interns work on projects and tasks providing research, administrative, and staff assistance to city managers. Past interns have assisted city staff in such functions as:
- Research and analysis
- Drafting presentations and reports
- Financial Analysis
- Program Planning
- Organizational and Administrative Support
Applicants must be a current undergraduate or graduate-level student in order to apply (recent college graduates may be considered). Undergraduates must have completed their sophomore year by the beginning of the program to be considered. A background in one or more of the following areas is desired: law, business/management, communications, public policy, economics, finance, human resources, social services, public health or public administration. Exceptional generalists will also be considered.
This is a non-paying internship, requiring a minimum commitment of 25 hours per week. Mayor's Interns are required to participate in the "Exploring Government" weekly programming and group project, which are included as part of the intern's 25 hours each week. Wherever possible, the City will cooperate with programs under which students may earn academic credit or qualify for work-study, when that work-study is fully subsidized by the college or university.
Application and Interview Process
Upon receipt of your application materials, the Office of Leadership Investment will contact you to conduct an initial screening interview. Selected applicants will then participate in a second round of interviews with a city department. Applicants will be notified of their selection to the program in early April.
Potential applicants for the 2012 Mayor's Internship Program with the City of Philadelphia must submit a complete application by Friday, February 17, 2013.
You must complete all four items on the Application Checklist below to be considered for the internship program. All information must be submitted by 5:00 PM (Philadelphia, PA time) on February 17, 2013. No late response will be accepted. Hard copy applications will also not be accepted. The resume, letter of recommendation and essay response must be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org by the application deadline. The email subject should read: MIP Application [Enter Applicant Name].
The letter of recommendation may be emailed directly from your reference and does not need to be submitted with your other application materials. However, it must be received by the application deadline. If sent separately, the email subject should read: MIP Recommendation [Enter Applicant Name].
