The Future of 315: What's Your Opinion?
New York's utility regulator, the Public Service Commission, is considering a plan to change the current 315 Area Code region, splitting the region in two or creating an "overlay" code that would be assigned to new phones and digital devices. The PSC says the change is needed due to our increasing use of mobile phones and digital devices that threatens to exhaust the supply of 8 million available numbers in the 315 area by 2017.
It's the fifth time since 1999 that the PSC has warned of the imminent depletion of available phone numbers. Two years ago, Senator Ritchie urged the PSC to scrap the new area code plan, calling it an expensive inconvenience that's unnecessary since there are still hundreds of thousands of unused numbers available in the region.
What do you think? Would you support a new area code that splits the region in two parts, with different area codes for each so that, for example, Watertown and Syracuse would have different area codes?
Or would you prefer the overlay option, like that in use in New York City, where next-door neighbors--or your home and mobile phones--could each have different area codes, and calling any number in the region would require you to dial 10 or 11 digits, including area code?
