ArtDoors - Artist Expression of Interest

ArtDoors Whakatū/Nelson is an aspirational project that aims to transform around 100 of the city’s doors over a two year period.

This project will connect business and property owners with local makers and creators whose artwork will be used to transform both tired or plain-looking doors and windows, adding a splash of colour and optimism to our city streets.

Building on the already highly successful Nelson City Centre ArtWalk, this project will bring foot traffic of locals and visitors who may walk around the city, using a digital guide or brochure.

The project will showcase the talented artists that reside in our city and region. If you would like to participate in this project please complete the form below.

By submitting your artwork you consent to your artwork to be used for marketing and promotional purposes.

You will be required to supply a high resolution photograph (300dpi) of your original artwork. If this is difficult for you, please contact us.

Should you have any questions regarding this, please contact  Anne Rush anne@makeshsiftspaces.nz at Make/Shift Spaces or Lloyd Harwood at Arts Council Nelson on 0273269166

Call to Artists
To progress this initiative, we wish to create a catalogue of available images and are calling for expressions of interest from visual artists who would like to submit images of their work for possible inclusion. Artwork may be of 2D or 3D sculpture/craft object origin.

The image of the artwork may be appropriately cropped to a usable format for the project as required.

It is crucial that artists submit images of artwork which they can supply a high-resolution digital file (minimum of 300dpi) of their work if selected for a doorway. This is important for printing purposes, and a requirement for proposing images to be considered. Smaller digital images should be used for the initial expression of interest.

We anticipate a strong response from artists and will consequently undertake a selection process to chose works for the initial catalogue. Unselected images shall be held on file for possible future selection rounds. All submitters will be advised accordingly.

The project partners will approach prospective building owners/tenants within the CBD and provide access to the catalogue for them to select a work they may like to have on their door.

The selected artist will then be advised of the business match and any required changes to image format to fit the chosen door for their approval. If an agreement is reached an ‘Artist usage fee’ of $300 (+ GST if registered) will be actioned on completion of production and installation.

Acceptance of the ‘usage fee’ provides the artist consent for their image to be reproduced in a large format print and publicly sited as part of the Artdoors Project. In addition, the fee provides artist consent for images installed in doorways to be used for promotional purposes of the project at the organiser’s discretion.

Photographing your artwork - Tips from Tim Cuff, Photographer
'Two key things to consider when photographing flat artwork (sculpture and installations are completely different subject matter) are the quality of lighting in the room and the angle at which you shoot it.

When I photograph paintings I invariably put studio lights either side and some distance away from the artwork to ensure even light and minimum reflections, but with some clever positioning and playing with blinds and curtains you can create a similar ‘studio’ space. The surface of the artwork will reflect whatever light is in the room but mainly the light behind the camera so don’t place the artwork in a position where a window is behind you. Diffused side light, preferably from both sides, is ideal.

Ensure the artwork is framed tightly in the viewfinder and that the edges are square. Don’t use a wide-angle lens as it distorts but any lens 50mm or longer will give a natural look. Spend some time adjusting the camera to make sure it’s centred and perpendicular to the artwork. Using a tripod makes things much easier.

And when you do finally start photographing the piece shoot the highest resolution JPEGs your camera will produce. If you’re confident with a camera RAW files will give you the best results and need a bit of software to process but will give maximum creative control.' Tim Cuff

Terms and Conditions
Artists may submit multiple work images for possible inclusion. Organisers retain the right to select images for the catalogue at their discretion.

Selected images will used for one doorway only, although an artist may have several different artworks selected for the project.

Images submitted must be the artists’ own work and not impinge on other’s intellectual property.

Artists shall be acknowledged on prints and a QR code may be used to direct viewers to further information.

Artists shall receive a one-off usage fee for each of their images selected for print production. Artists whose images are not selected for doorway installations shall not be eligible for an ‘usage fee’.

Duration of display:
  • Organisers expect that selected images shall remain in situ for the life of the print which will depend on the sunlight exposure of the site. Should a doorway owner wish to reprint a damaged or faded image the artist hereby agrees that a second print may be produced without incurring a second artist usage fee.
  • Organisers retain the right to remove images and not replace them at their discretion and/or anytime should damage occur or building ownership change during the life of the project.
  • Should a business change address and wish to retain the image they selected, a second print
  • may be produced without incurring a second artist usage fee.
