The Effective Communication for Scientists Certificate Program takes place over 7 weeks. There are six classes (July 15, 22, 29 & August 5, 12, 26) and one individual coaching session (week of August 19). Classes are on Mondays from 4-6pm in Nat Sci 1-1114. You must attend all 6 sessions and the individual appointment. Spots are limited.
The program will cover presentation fundamentals including how to overcome nerves, make a presentation active rather than passive, utilize vocal variety, and command a room. In this interactive class, you will learn how to craft, organize and deliver your ideas in a clear and captivating way. You will practice your skills in groups, with an elevator pitch and a five-minute presentation.
This program will not only give you a certificate you can put on your resume or CV, but will also give you the tools you need to communicate effectively throughout your career.
This program will be taught by Bri McWhorter. She is the founder of Activate to Captivate, where she teaches communication techniques from an actor’s point of view. Bri has taught workshops on communication skills at Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, and various universities including UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Santa Cruz. She is a speech coach for academics and industry professionals.
