The MUN Program serves as an exciting way to learn about world affairs and international politics in true-to-life simulations. MUN provides a unique atmosphere for students to develop their skills in public speaking, teamwork, leadership and communication. Everyone gets the chance to work with a diverse group of people from around the world in international academic conferences. Students also get a chance to meet with real diplomats at their embassies and get to visit several places, including the United Nations, Congress, and the White House.
MUN Delegates are chosen according to application, a mock Civil Service exam, provide a writing sample, and complete an interview. All delegates have taken a series of classes to understand the United Nations and international issues. Lecture topics range from learning about international relations to the internal politics of specific countries. Once on the team, delegates are assigned a country and a UN committee, complete 6 months of research on their country assignment and develop an intimate enough knowledge so that the student can best represent their country at the conference. MUN delegates also write a position paper on their committee’s topics, develop policy prescriptions, learn real-world conference’s rules and procedures, and develop their speaking skills.
MUN delegates from the Victor Valley College have become world-renowned in the National Model United Nations circuit for their outstanding delegations and outstanding position papers. Their collective awards put the team in the top 2.5% of the world, despite competing with delegates from universities such as Harvard, Syracuse University, Universite de Montreal, Universite du Quebec a Montreal, University of British Columbia, University of California, Riverside, American University in Cairo, Brigham Young University and many others!
