When I call on them (in on-line synchronous classes), they don't respond, so I'm not sure they're even there.

I conference with them extra, outside of class.

I set up different office hours, at a range of times, to accommodate the time difference

I present course material in multiple ways (i.e., spoken, written, image-supported, etc.)

I give them time to write answers before asking them to speak to the class.

I let them discuss answers in pairs of small groups before speaking to the class

I post the class material prior to the class in advance on D2L.

I talk to them personally, to learn what I can do to help.

I turn on closed-caption on Zoom, so students can read my words as well as hear me speak.
