Bates Parent Involvement - Fall 2021
Bates Elementary School has a longstanding tradition that someone from every Bates family serves on a committee or volunteers during the Bates Pumpkin Fair. Since the Pumpkin Fair cannot happen as usual this year, we're asking every family to volunteer in some other way this fall.

How can you help keep the Bates community strong, even in the time of COVID? Please volunteer for one of these options, or let us know other ways you can share your time and expertise. Questions? Comments? Add them below or reach out to us at batesptomail@gmail.com. Thank you!

Can you help with the Creative Arts and Sciences program?
The Creative Arts and Sciences program supports enrichment opportunities for all students in the areas of social studies, science, math, literacy, music and art with whole school assemblies and grade-specific programs in the classroom. This may look a bit different this year - e.g., Zoom meetings instead of assemblies. We're looking for grade-level parent representatives to help coordinate speakers and activities and work with teachers to help organize dates and logistics for the visits.

Can you be a room parent this year?
Room parents will help the teachers connect with parents and students and help parents connect with each other to navigate the hybrid learning model.

Can you help with community engagement events?
For example:

- The Bates Pumpkin Fair will be different this year. The PTO is brainstorming a number of ideas, and would love creative parents to help with the planning process.

- Many of our normal family activities (e.g., Bates Movie Night, Jingle Bell Jam) will not be able to happen as they usually do. We are developing new ideas to bring Bates families together in a safe way.

- The PTO plans to hold regular evening Zoom calls throughout the fall to offer parents a forum where they can connect with each other, share tips and tricks, and provide suggestions based on their experiences with the hybrid or remote learning models.

- Bates holds an Auction every two years. The funds raised cover a significant portion of PTO spending. The April 2020 Auction had to be postponed, and may now be held as an online Auction in late 2020/early 2021. The Auction Chairs are hard at work, and could use help from other parents.
I am / we are interested in helping with these events:
Can you help with the Bates gardens and grounds?
Bates is known around town for its grounds and gardens, which parent volunteers have been helping with for years. This is a great way to support the school whenever convenient for you in an outdoor, socially distanced way.
Are there other ways you can help Bates this year?
These are just a few ways families can volunteer their time to build the Bates community. If none of them work for you, or if you have other ideas, please suggest ways you can help.
How can the Bates PTO serve the Bates community this year?
What else should the PTO be doing or thinking about during this challenging time? Any ideas, suggestions, or questions for the PTO? Please share them here or reach out any time at batesptomail@gmail.com.
