Digging Deeper: Edible Schoolyard NYC Spring Training Course Application
APPLICATIONS DUE MONDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2014
Course Requirements
-You must work at a pre-K-8 New York City public school to participate
-At least two people from the school must participate in the course
-At least one of the two people must be a teacher
-Both participants must attend all 6 after school sessions plus one site visit to an Edible Schoolyard NYC demonstration site
-The participants must host two visits from Edible Schoolyard NYC staff; one to support gardening, the other to observe and support teaching.
-The participants must teach and document at least one kitchen-based and one garden-based lesson.
Priority will be given to:
-Schools registered with Grow to Learn NYC
-Schools in East and Central Harlem, the South Bronx or Central Brooklyn (DPHO areas)
-Title I schools
-Schools with existing gardens

Thursday, February 26, 4pm-6pm: Program Overview, Gardening 101
Thursday, March 5, 4pm-6pm: Garden planning, Garden lessons—Square Foot Planting, Design your own Salad, All About Soil
Thursday, March 12, 4pm-6pm: Setting up the kitchen classroom, Seasonal kitchen lesson—root vegetables
Thursday, March 26, 4pm-6pm: Planting (indoor/outdoor), Garden lessons—What Do Plants Need to Survive, Which Soil Do Plants Prefer
Thursday, April 16, 4pm-6pm: Kitchen education basics, Seasonal kitchen lesson—legumes
Thursday, April 30, 4pm-6pm: Garden maintenance (watering, weeding, mulching), Garden lessons—water cycle, roots
and measurement, mulching, Celebration!
*All workshops will be held at our demonstration site at PS/MS 7 in Harlem, 160 East 120th Street, Manhattan, NY 10035
Visits to participants’ sites by Edible Schoolyard NYC staff will take place on Thursdays
when there are no classes and no school vacation. (3/19, 4/2, 4/23, 5/5, and 5/12).
