Let us look at the justification for using the red color for cold temperatures and blue for warm temperatures at color-enhanced thermal IR imagery.

In most countries, bathroom taps are labeled in such a way that red indicates hot water and blue represents cold water. This is just opposite as compared to the above-shown color enhancement of satellite thermal IR imagery. Red color is for a human brain an indication of some form of danger. In bathroom the hot water can scald your hands. In meteorology, the highest and thus coldest tops of convective storms typically represent the most dangerous parts of storms, their cores, and for this reason the coldest tops are shown in red.

By Wien's displacement law, red stands for cold range of electromagnetic spectrum, blue for its hot end. Also this is one of the reasons why the cold storm tops are shown in red.

From aesthetic and physiological considerations, storm cores shown in red are more explicit/ attract the attention / look nicer than if they were shown in blue.
