Job Application:  3D Layout Artist

Mighty Yeti Studios is a creator-owned indie animation studio specializing in kids and family entertainment. We're seeking a talented 3D Layout Artist (Maya) to join our creative team in bringing our original animated series to life. All positions are remote freelance/part-time independent contractor roles.

In this role, you will be responsible for translating our storyboards and scripts into dynamic 3D sequences using Maya’s Sequencer. You’ll set up shots, establish camera angles, and refine blocking to ensure compelling visual storytelling. Must have TV series 3D layout experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Work from storyboards and scripts to create cinematic 3D sequences in Maya using Maya’s Sequencer.
  • Establish and compose shots, camera movements, and staging that align with the director’s vision.
  • Block out character animation, camera angles, and timing to build the foundation for final animation.
  • Ensure continuity of framing and staging across sequences while maintaining clarity in storytelling.
  • Collaborate with the Director, Storyboard Artists, and Animators to refine camera language, shot flow, and visual pacing.
  • Troubleshoot and adjust scene layouts based on creative feedback and technical constraints.
  • Maintain an efficient and organized layout workflow within the production pipeline.

Requirements:

  • 2+ years of experience working as a Layout Artist / Layout Animator in animation, film, or TV production.
  • Proficiency in Maya’s Sequencer and strong understanding of 3D layout, staging, and cinematography.
  • Ability to translate 2D storyboards into dynamic and visually engaging 3D sequences.
  • Strong sense of composition, camera movement, and storytelling through shot design.
  • Familiarity with animation principles, shot continuity, and scene blocking.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to adapt layouts based on creative and technical feedback.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively within a team.
  • Must be detail oriented and have the experience and ability to work in a technically rigid pipeline.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working on preschool animated series or children’s content.
  • Familiarity with other animation software and tools, such as Blender and Unreal Engine.
  • A portfolio showcasing a strong range of character animation work, demonstrating creativity and technical proficiency.
  • Self-driven with a history of working on smaller animation teams.
