About Wilderness Youth Project
The mission of Wilderness Youth Project (WYP) is to foster confidence, health, and a life-long love of learning for young people and families through active outdoor experiences and mentoring. WYP envisions teaching the next generation to be peaceful, respectful and confident stewards of our world.

We accomplish this by spending time with children in many places around the Santa Barbara area. We share gratitude, play, hike, swim, get wet, get muddy, hide in bushes, observe and encounter wildlife, wander, play games and learn earth skills such as fire tending, gourd bowl making, processing animals, using knives safely, identifying wild edibles among many others.

We ask all of our volunteers to make a commitment to personally strive to grow their own life skills, awareness, personal gifts, and empathy as they work with us. The youth sense this congruence in the mentors (staff & volunteers) and open up to undertaking the process themselves by watching the example of the staff and volunteers. This helps to create a community of people who are growing together genuinely.

We work with volunteers to learn and grow together, and there is much more information on our website and in our volunteer manual.
