Mississippi River Summer Leadership Program Application


Current 9th-12th grade students are eligible to join us for 5 days as we paddle from Helena to Arkansas City. You will be part of the crew as you learn canoeing, camping, and navigation skills. Spots are available to residents of Phillips and Coahoma County for $100 per participant. All experience levels are welcome. All safety and camping equipment is provided.


When is the trip? June 11th-15th, 2018

Who is eligible? Current high school students and students entering 9th grade in Fall 2018.

What will the trip be like? You will be part of the crew as we travel from Helena to Arkansas City over 5 days. Each day we will wake up, cook breakfast, load up the boats and paddle approximately 20 miles on the river. While on the water you will help maneuver the boat, and learn from the experienced guides about how to navigate on the water. We will stop along the way to go for walks, swim or learn about the wildlife along the Mississippi. At night we will cook dinner and set up camp. In the evening you’ll have time to work on learning more about navigation and help planning for the next day's adventure.

Do I need any experience? No! All experience levels are welcome. Our experienced guides will teach you everything you need to know about how to paddle on the Mighty Mississippi.

Is it safe? Our number one goal is safety on the water. Our guides are experienced and will show you how to paddle safely. Life jackets will be provided and will be worn at all times when on the boats.

What will I need? You will need clothes, a rain jacket, sunscreen, a headlamp or flashlight, a hat and two pairs of shoes. We will provide each participant with a tent, sleeping bag and lifejacket. All meals and canoeing equipment will be provided for each participant.

Can I bring my phone? No. The goal of this trip is to enjoy nature and there is nothing more distracting than a cell phone! We will have a phone for the group and will share the contact information with your family so they can contact us if needed. A digital camera that does not access the internet is welcome but other than that there will be no electronic devices on the trip.

How much does it cost? Spots are available to residents of Phillips and Coahoma Counties for $100 per student. If you live outside of these countries you are welcome to attend but will need to pay the full cost of the trip ($750/student).

How do I apply? Complete the attached application or complete the application online at www.lowermississippiriverfoundation.org . We can only accept 10 participants from Arkansas and 10 from Mississippi, so hurry!

How will you decide who gets to go? Applications will be reviewed and offers will be given based on the amount of effort and interest demonstrated in your answers. We want students who are interested in coming on the trip and believe they will benefit from it. Participants will be informed if they have been accepted by April 15th.
