To Our Medicare Patients:
At Midwest Dizziness and Balance Institute (MDBI) we offer specialized services with state-of-the-art equipment to treat various balance and dizziness conditions. As with anything in medicine, it takes years to establish validity and to have enough data to support the use of specialized testing and treatment. Here at MDBI, we have been at the forefront of comprehensive vestibular testing and treatment that is extremely effective. Unfortunately, Medicare can take anywhere from 12-20 years to recognize the validity of certain medical procedures and they require extensive data to show why this is effective for their patients in order for them to cover the service.
For example: in our test battery for your full evaluation, we administer something called Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential Testing (both ocular and cervical), this test originated in 1992 and provides invaluable information into the function of your 2 balance organs. We have been administering this test since 2008 at our practice and it wasn't until January 2021 when Medicare started covering this test.
Although we make every attempt possible to provide Medicare with procedure descriptions, medical necessity and precise billing practices, for the procedures and treatments essential to your diagnosis, we know that your Medicare policy will not cover or deem these procedures and treatments payable and you will be responsible for the cost of these procedures. Private insurances are covering these already, however Medicare is NOT. We heavily discount the balance as a courtesy to the patient, while still attempting to maintain our costs for the services and equipment.
Therefore it is our policy that certain charges be paid for upfront prior to services or treatments being rendered. In the additional section that follows (Medicare ABN), these charges and procedures are outlined for you. Please be prepared to cover this cost when you check in for your appointment, as we cannot see you prior to payment being rendered.
We strive to provide the best diagnostic and treatment options for you and we look forward to helping you with your dizziness, vertigo and imbalance.
Thank you for your understanding.
