2017 Metroplex Colloquium - The Oakridge School
Thank you to all persons who contributed ideas and suggestions to the google doc for planning next year's colloquium. There were a lot of great ideas in terms of suggested texts and possible topics. I noticed that race, identity, poltics, and technology came up pretty frequently as well as a desire to focus on more diverse voices. I've got four ideas, some more clearly worked out than others, and I would appreciate it if everyone could vote on the option they favor the most. The four possible topics are as follows:

1. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (200 year anniversary is 2018; nice intersection of issues such as tech, otherness, gender)
2. a selection of science fiction texts (I was thinking we could suggest a handful of short stories and/or novellas)
3. a selection of texts about totalitarianism & politics (perhaps 1984, Brave New World, Lord of the Flies, Handmaid's Tale)
4. Chicago Then, Chicago Now (an examination of Hansberry's Raisin in the Sun & Wright's Native Son)
