Petition Condemning Jack Ma’s Inappropriate Comments Regarding “June Fourth” and Demanding a Public Apology

According to media reports, former Alibaba CEO Jack Ma recently made the following statements during an interview with Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post: “As CEO of a company, whether it’s the scandal involving Alibaba or the spinning off of Alipay, at that moment you’re like Deng Xiaoping during ‘June Fourth.’ As the country’s highest policymaker, he wanted stability. It was necessary for him to make this cruel decision. It wasn’t a perfect decision, but it was the most correct decision--the most correct decision at the time. At any time, a person in charge must make these kinds of decisions.”

As everyone knows, “June Fourth” (also known as the Tiananmen Incident, the 1989 Student Movement, and the 1989 Popular Movement) refers to the patriotic and democratic movement that took place in Beijing and throughout China between April and June 1989. The incident concluded when the Chinese government declared martial law in Beijing and sent the army to Tiananmen Square to use military force to suppress the movement and clear the square. According to official and unofficial statistics, hundreds or even thousands of students and urban residents lost their lives during the crackdown. Direct and unshirkable responsibility for this bloody crackdown rests with then-Central Military Commission Chairman Deng Xiaoping, then-State Council Premier Li Peng, and others. To this day, the Chinese authorities continue to uphold the original verdict on this incident and have never held anyone responsible for the crackdown.

As a leader in China’s Internet industry, Jack Ma should shoulder the requisite historical, moral, and social responsibilities. Instead, however, he says of Deng Xiaoping’s decision to suppress the student movement: “It was the most correct decision--the most correct decision at that time.” Such extremely irresponsible language goes completely against the facts of history and runs counter to the world’s universally accepted assessment of “June Fourth.” We express deep anger and severe condemnation of Jack Ma’s comments!

We demand that Jack Ma:

1.收回在接受《南华早报》采访时所发表的不当言论;
2.郑重向所有的“六四事件”的死难者、参与者及世人公开道歉;

1. Retract the inappropriate comments he made in his interview with the South China Morning Post; and
2. Make a solemn and public apology to all those who were victims of or participants in “June Fourth,” as well as to all ordinary people.

So long as Jack Ma fails to respond to the above demands, we call on the public to, insofar as they have a choice, refrain from supporting any investments, products, or services connected with Jack Ma, including but not limited to Alibaba, Alipay, and Sina.net.

We also hope that other public figures will be forewarned and pay attention to their historical, moral, and social responsibilities when making public comments so that they may withstand public scrutiny and the test of time.
