Open Call: 2020 Beats in Bliss Plaza Performance Series!
Sunnyside Shines is accepting proposals from Queens-based performance artists to participate in "Beats In Bliss Plaza," an outdoor performance series featuring live performing arts. Performances take place from June through September 2020 in Bliss Plaza, a public plaza under the elevated 7 train at 46th St./Bliss St. station in Sunnyside. Shows are free and open to the public, and typically attract several hundred spectators per performance in a highly trafficked, central location.
We invite applications from musicians to fill the following performance Dates:
Beats in Bliss Plaza introduces residents to the impressive array of professional musicians that work and live in the neighborhood and borough, building new audiences for their work and for the arts at large. By scheduling performances during evening rush hour, we capture a diverse audience -- working professionals returning to the neighborhood, seniors who take advantage of the sitting areas in the plaza during the day, and families looking for activities after school and before dinner.
We are especially interested in performances that reflect our diverse local community and its heritages and stories; some of the major cultural communities that call Sunnyside/Woodside home hail from the Philippines, Ireland, Colombia, Turkey, Mexico, Romania, Nepal, Tibet, Bangladesh, and Japan.
Each proposal will be reviewed by Sunnyside Shines staff and our Community Advisory Committee, with a commitment to build more spaces and opportunities for creativity in Sunnyside and Woodside.
Applications are due Friday March 6th at 11:59 PM. Selected performers will be notified by April 10th.
Selected performers will be offered a fee of $500. Performers are expected to arrive at the Plaza by 4:45PM to set up, or earlier to ensure a 5 PM start. Sunnyside Shines provides a generator and sound system onsite. Performers must be able to commit to a performance agreement committing to two 45-minute sets (starting at 5 pm, and 6 pm respectively.) For dance groups, a combination of performance and audience mini-lesson can be proposed.
