Distribution - Pick up flags from the shipping container at the back corner of the student parking lot (near tennis courts)
1. Before you pickup flags from the container: Some locations may not have the flag holder set up yet. You may want to bring gloves, hammer, rebar. Flags can be dirty. Dress appropriately.
2. When you arrive to pickup your flags for your route, find the binder/binders that have been assigned to you, note the number of flags on your routes, and collect them from the shipping container. It’s good to take a few extra in case you encounter a damaged flag. Return all extras when you’re done.
3. Proceed to your route! Where applicable, we have tried our best to provide specific instructions for tricky locations, gate codes, or other neighborhood access information. If you run into problems, contact the flag chairs. Each location *should* have a small white marker on the curb with the word “flag” on it, indicating that the sleeve for the flag is located there. Please note that you may only see a faded black circle where the marker used to be. Sometimes the grass grows up around/over it, and you may have to look/dig around for the sleeve. If you cannot locate the marker or sleeve, verify that you do have the correct address. If you do, please use rebar (hammered 6-8” into the soil) and secure the flag over the rebar. You may have to remove some dried mud from the pole first. Make a note on the route sheet. For example, an “R” next to the checkmark will work. Check off all flags as you go, making sure to notice the occasional location that will require more than one flag. IF you find that you are short a flag, please come back to the container and get an extra. We will leave some out for this purpose. DO NOT place a damaged flag.
4. Can’t find the address? Sometimes addresses are out of order, numbers have been entered out of order, or the location should be “lane” rather than “drive”, etc. If you notice anything like this on your list, please make a note on the route sheet. Note: All addresses have been located in previous distributions, so it is highly unlikely that your address is not there. Still can’t find it? Google/GPS it. STILL can’t find it? Contact the flag chairs.
5. Customer service: We do not own/operate this flag service. We are only a distribution channel. We will often have people come out to talk to you and ask why they didn’t get a flag, why it hasn’t been delivered yet, etc. ALWAYS refer them to the iwantaflag.com website, and assure them we will correct the situation as soon as we are able.
Collection - after the holiday
1. DO NOT pick up flags that are NOT on your route sheet. If a flag on your sheet is missing, make a note and move on. We aren’t the only people doing flags and the flag may belong to another group.
2. If you wish, you may pick up flags AFTER 6PM on the DAY OF the holiday. But note that flags may only be returned to the shipping container during the provided access times unless other arrangements are made with the flag chairs. Otherwise, please pick them up as soon after the holiday as possible. Tick off each flag as you collect them, and make sure you pick up as many as you put out! Neatly roll and rubber band each flag.
3. DO NOT pick up wet flags! Flags need to be rolled up and rubber banded prior to storage, and therefore must be completely dry. Please roll them neatly, rubber band them, and place them neatly on a rack in storage.
4. Turn in your route binders. THIS IS HOW YOU GET CREDIT!
Important notes:
*DO NOT skip an address. Customers get very upset when they are missed.
*DO NOT take payment for flags or take anyone’s information. If someone approaches you wanting flags, ALWAYS direct them to iwantaflag.com (use the QR code on the binder). If they have already signed up previously, still direct them to the site and remind them of the need to renew their flag subscription annually. Strongly encourage online subscription rather than mailing a check.
*If you have more extras than you took initially, DOUBLE CHECK that you did not miss a flag on route. Pay special attention to addresses needing more than 1 flag!
*Please return unused rebar to the provided bucket when you complete distribution.
It is critical that ALL flags are delivered! Double check every address, and make sure the flags are undamaged and secured properly. If this is not possible please call/text/email so that we can make arrangements to have a flag placed.
