Watched some Critical Role videos and looking for the next Matt Mercer as my DM.
Just beginning 5e, thought it was cool and played some, but basically fresh clay to be molded.
1-2 years as a player. I know how to avoid traps and that the pointy end goes toward the enemy.
2-5 years as a player. I know might know stuff from 3.5e too. There are cool stories to tell.
5+ years as a player. Seen enough awesomeness to be very creative.
I've been DMing for years and need a break as a player.

This campaign uses Grim Hollow's "gritty rest" system, specifically a quick rest (1 hour), a short rest (24 hours), a long rest (72 hours).
Great! More time for role-playing, crafting, and exploration.
Sweet. Shorter combats with less opponents, and more options to side-step encounters entirely..
It sucks! I need to recharge my character abilities regularly to feel like I'm winning.
I'm neutral, it's about managing resources in dangerous situations, and creating solutions with what I've got.

When faced with a room full of enemies, what's the best way to proceed?
The path of least resistance, conservation of spell slots and arrows.
With as many options as possible, I love it when a plan comes together.
Whichever way produces the most chances for physical violence.. and loot!
Why fight the goblins, when you can be their boss!

Solving the puzzle traps and plucking the golden idle from atop its display pedestal.

I forget that I have it and it wastes away like an old knickknack.

I get advantage on Reckless Attack anyway, save it for those intelligence checks I keep failing.

Hide, whatever dragon-proof safe room protects my character.
Rally the town guards, the wizard, and coordinate the defenses; then lead the counter-attack.
It's basically pandemonium, so much loot, so little time.
Hire a doppelganger to infiltrate the enemy forces and sell supplies to both sides.

Frustrated that the DM didn't readily provide the key to pass the gate and complain of being railroaded.
Indifferent, complications happen, and probably missed something to get past the obstacle.
Excited, finally get to battle those ogres, take their loot, and capture the green slime to melt the gate.
Encouraged, speaking Giantese will finally paid off, its time to expand your growing empire.

Follow along, but prepared to run away when the fighting starts.
Send a group off-road, raid their camp, and take them by surprise.

"Surrender" to seek out the bandit leader and replace the management for better profit.

A group of goblin raiders riding giant spiders has just surrendered to your party after a fight that has downed two of your comrades. What's the next move?
Stand back as the party finishes them off and lament there wasn't a peaceful solution.
Go off-mission and search for a possible goblin camp containing stolen booty and confront whoever supplies the spiders.
Slay them all, check pockets, harvest the rarer spell components, and hide the bodies, before the enemies come looking.
Extract spider poison, interrogate, and conscript the survivors.

In an abandoned dungeon, you find a hidden room with clues to what's causing a town's plague, what do you do?
Upon return, long rest and inform the town leader.
Gather supplies, wizard advice, short rest, and prepare to raid the villain's lair for the cure. Long rest later.
Go now! Catch them by surprise to slay the villain. My dice are still hot!
That cure must be worth a lot to the town, set up some deals.

You've made a character with a high charisma proficient in deception, intimidation, and persuasion. What kind of encounters do you expect?
I expect to casually improv the RP, I shouldn't need to roll anything unless I have to.
I expect to persuade the local merchant to give me great discounts.
I expect to get a hefty damage bonus on my Eldritch Blasts, but don't ask to do any real role playing.
I expect to use those skills to manipulate combat in my favor, I have short prewritten monologues ready even before the first sword swings.

The DM flavors the loot description to sound epic with deep history, engravings, and social impact of possessing the family heirloom won from the BBEG. The loot turns out to be a +1 longsword.
I relish the lore and keep it as a treasured trophy even after I find a +2 longsword.
Even though it is cool, I hand it to my henchmen when a +2 longsword becomes available.
I am disappointed it is not a +2 longsword with all that lore buildup and BBEG fight. What a piece of trash!
I use it until meeting the first merchant as trade-bait, research, and favors for something I really want.

After a TPK, fellow players exclaim, in-private, that a big battle was unwinnable and the BBEG had "plot armor".
Agree with them, I'm in it to be entertained by the story and to feel victorious. D&D should be easy.
Its a learning experience and I assume a smart BBEG always has an exit plan plus effective tactics.
Quit the campaign. My sword and good dice rolls is all it should take to beat the BBEG.
Calm everyone and communicate with the DM for a post-mortem of what we could have done different.
