    A Little Bit About Utah Valley University's Prefreshman Engineering Program

    WHAT IS UVU PREP? UVU PREP is a mathematics-based, academic enrichment program. It emphasizes the development of abstract reasoning and problem solving skills. UVU PREP helps students prepare for careers in the fields of mathematics, science, technology, and engineering. The program includes course work, team projects, class presentations, examinations, career awareness speakers, and possible field trips, and special events. UVU PREP is held over the course of three summers. Students may reapply each year. YEAR 1 CURRICULUM: Logic and its “Applications to Mathematics,” “Introduction to Engineering,” “Problem Solving,” “Career Awareness” seminars, research, study time, possible field trips and other special events. WHO: Middle school students from the Utah County Area are expected to enroll. Members of minority groups and women are especially encouraged to apply. WHEN: Tuesday, June 3 – Friday, July 18, 2014, except July 4. WHERE: UVU PREP 1 will take place on both the Orem or Wasatch campus of Utah Valley University. COST: Though there is no enrollment fee, students are expected to arrange their own transportation and provide their own lunch or money for lunch. REQUIREMENTS: - Parental permission - 90% or better in mathematics class - 90% or better in science and English - Must be in good standing in all courses - Two satisfactory nominations from teachers or counselors - Satisfactory conduct grades - A well written essay describing "Why do you want to attend UVU PREP?" - Attendance is required for 7 weeks during the summer with only 3 excused absences accepted before dismissal. IMPORTANT: UVU PREP positions are competitive and are assigned on qualifying basis – so make sure your application is complete and submitted by the deadline, January 31, 2014, for consideration. IMPORTANT TIPS / CHECKLIST To increase your chances of being accepted, be sure to do the following: Read the information on UVU PREP. Be sure you are willing to fully commit to the program and make sure you have permission from your parent or guardian. Before completing the application, research and discuss transportation arrangements with your parents. Classes are held daily at the campuses of Utah Valley University. Submit your application on time. The application must be submitted on or before January 31, 2014. Review your application packet to ensure that you have included the following items (your application will NOT be processed until it is complete): 1. INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE YEAR ONE PREP APPLICATION: 1. Be sure to answer all questions. 2. Remember your parent/guardian’s permission. 3. Deadline: January 31, 2014. Don’t miss it! 4. Speak with your instructors about the teacher nomination form. Copies of the teacher nomination forms can be found on the UVU PREP website (uvu.edu/partnership/programs/summer). 5. Please send a copy of your most recent report card, a 100-200 word essay responding to the question "Why do you want to attend UVU PREP?" and your two teacher nominations to: UVU School Community University Partnership Attn: Year 1 UVU PREP Application MS 141 800 West University Parkway Orem, UT 84058-5999 2. CURRENT REPORT CARD Submit a copy of your current report card; no hand- written, no web based, and no progress reports are accepted. It MUST: 1. List the school district you live in under the Current School Information, even if you attend a private school or are home-schooled. 2. Include information on conduct. 3. Signed by your parent or guardian. Your application is incomplete without their signature. 4. Indicate if any of your courses are Gifted and Talented. 5. Be accompanied with two satisfactory nominations from the following: -Satisfactory nomination from your current Mathematics teacher -Satisfactory nomination from current Science teacher, English teacher or Counselor. 6. Be an official copy of latest report card . If you have lost your report card, ask your Guidance Counselor for a duplicate on school letterhead and have it signed by the Counselor or Principal. 3. TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION UVU PREP student participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the UVU campus. Talk to your parents. Check out bus routes, carpooling, or other transportation. 4. PRIVACY NOTICE With a few exceptions, you are entitled to be informed about the data UVU collects about you. “Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974” (FERPA) regulations will be followed to secure all information submitted. REMEMBER to mail your report card, teacher nominations, and 200 word essay by January 31, 2014. Mailed applications will only be accepted if postmarked on or before January 31, 2014.
