We’re seeking a versatile, outgoing assistant campus editor who is eager to develop editorial and managerial skills. This person will be an influential component of The Hilltop’s efforts to re-engage with students by attending events and employing faculty, student and organization highlights. The assistant campus editor should be engulfed in campus-related activities and build relationships with the Howard University community at-large.
Duties and Responsibilities: - Meet strict editorial deadlines and communicate progress to executive managing editor- Research news, events and public policies daily to assist the news editor with developing news budget consistent with The Hilltop’s reporting goals and objectives- Craft and identify #HilltopHighlights article/social media opportunities to showcase influential students, teachers and campus organizations - Work with executive team and university officials to coordinate organization of the month, student of the month, alumni member of the month and faculty member of the month features monthly - Craft engaging, concise Campus News of the Week print segment to provide public with a brief overviews of local, world, national and campus-related news and events- Copyedit and revise articles to ensure that content meets expectations of news editor and develop three articles monthly- Check progress of writers before deadlines and distribute reminders of upcoming deadlines- Attend meetings and functions and serve as an assistant during production night- Attend events and build relationships with administrators, student government leaders, organizations and professors- Recruit writers on a consistent basis to increase participation for the news section- Enforce and disseminate writing style guide to writers to ensure that content meets organizational goals and objectives
