Decades after the nation was made aware of the dangers of lead in the paint used in our homes, children in Syracuse have been identified with some of the highest lead levels in the country.  Like most people, I thought this was a problem in the past, but our most vulnerable children are still testing high for lead.  Lead Poisoning is known to have serious impacts on children's behavior and on their ability to learn.  Lead poisoning is also completely preventable!  Rundown housing with paint in deteriorated condition is the source of the problem.  Peeling paint can be seen,  but the real problem is lead dust which is unseen and can be inhaled and ingested.  Young children are more vulnerable because they are still growing and developing.

Tomorrow’s Neighborhoods Today: Southside Housing Taskforce aims to reduce the risk of getting lead poisoning through creating awareness of the high lead level problem in some of our neighborhoods across the city of Syracuse. We have joined forces with other community groups across the city to tackle this issue head-on.

This Summer we are going to have a “Get The Lead Out Block Party” to promote awareness and to teach people how to reduce their risk of getting lead poisoning.  Furthermore, according to N.Y.S. Department of Health, the following zip codes have the highest risk of high lead levels 13203,13204,13205,13207, and 13208.  We are looking for volunteers to assist us with the  “Get The Lead Out Block Party”.
