Please help us balance the state’s budget. If you were in charge of the following agencies and faced a mandatory 20 percent budgetary cut, which services would you cut? What decision would you make?

Department of Human Services: *

Services for 25,000 individuals with developmental disabilities

Child care services for 39,000 children

Shelters and programs for 11,000 victims of domestic abuse

Lay off 2,500 staff

Department of Children and Family Services *

No longer provide services for 3,500 children

Cut $140 million from the agency’s budget

Department of Public Health *

Close 8 school health centers

Close the Illinois Poison Control Center

Lay off surveyors in nursing homes

Prevent 6000 women from receiving screenings for breast and cervical cancer

Department of Veterans’ Affairs *

Reduce mental health services for 10,000 veterans with PTSD

Close all field offices, reducing services to over 150,000 veterans

Lay off 533 staff employees

Unfortunately, these agencies will have to make all of these cuts and more. DHS will have to make drastic cuts to reduce its budget by $635 million, Department of Corrections by $300 million and DPH by $26 million. *
