Anatomy and Physiology
2021-2022
Dear Students and Parents:
Welcome to Anatomy and Physiology.
This course orientation has been prepared to communicate the expectations, course content, course
requirements, policies and other information that is necessary to achieve academically and to experience
a positive learning experience. Please read it carefully and share it. If you do not understand something,
or have a question about any part of the communication, please feel free to contact me for clarification.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This yearlong study of the human body is an elective science course. It is designed for accelerated
students who want to expand on their science studies and for those students who may desire to pursue a
career in the health-related fields.
The study of Anatomy and Physiology attempts to instill in the student a true interest and appreciation
for the human body. Topics are explored through lectures, readings, drawings, songs, writings, group
activities, discussions, special projects and virtual labs.
COURSE GOALS/OVERVIEW
The following five goals will be addressed:
1. The student shall understand the organization of the body studying the structure and function of cells,
tissues, organs, and organ systems.
2. The student shall become familiar with the organ systems of the body, how the structure relates to the
function, how they relate to each other, and how they maintain homeostasis.
3. The student shall comprehend the complexity of the body through the dissections of mammalian
specimens.
4. The student shall become familiar with problems and diseases of the body systems and the
medical/clinical tests that are used for diagnosis and treatment.
5. The student will expand on their vocabulary by studying medical terminology.
6. Through the curriculum, students will become competent in the subject matter, learn to communicate
through discussions and presentations, problem solve through diagnosis, become better citizens as they
learn tolerance and understanding of illnesses, and become lifelong learners about the body and their
health.
COURSE OUTLINE
General topics include:
1. HUMAN ORGANIZATION-the cell, tissue, membranes, and skin.
2. SUPPORT AND MOVEMENT-the skeletal and muscular systems.
3. INTEGRATION AND COORDINATION-the nervous and endocrine systems, the senses.
4. MAINTENANCE OF THE BODY-blood, the circulatory, lymphatic, immunity, respiratory, digestive, and
excretory systems.
5. REPRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT-the reproductive system.
TEXTBOOK AND OTHER MATERIALS
Textbooks are optional and will only be used as an extra resource. The book for Honors A&P class is Essentials of Human Anatomy and Physiology, by John Hole.
The basic textbook is Understanding Human Anatomy and Physiology, by Sylvia Mader.
ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADING SYSTEM
Each assignment will receive points. The student’s grade average is calculated by dividing the total
number of points earned by the student by the total number of points possible. The grading scale is as
follows:
100-90%=A 89-80%=B 79-70%=C 69-60%=D 59-0%=F
Grades are posted (usually weekly) on the "GRADES" page on the website.
MASKS-Masks are required to be worn by all students and staff while in the classroom. Masks may be
taken down for a quick sip of water but must be replaced immediately.” There will be no eating in the
classrooms. For students who do not comply with the mask policy please refer to the following:
1st Warning: Student will be reminded to wear/replace their mask over their nose and mouth
2nd Warning: Student will receive a referral to the SRC
3rd Violation: Student will receive a second referral to the SRC. Administration will take additional
steps with students who continue to not comply with the mask policy.
In case Virtual learning is reinstated: Online learning assignments will include reading curriculum,
watching videos, and working assignments in classkick.
