Chinese Language Placement Test
你好!欢迎来到布朗大学!
你好!歡迎來到布朗大學!

Please fill out the questionnaire below and complete the short essay. The written test and the oral proficiency interview is scheduled at noon 9/02 at Barus & Holley, Room 166.

Overview

1. Who should take the placement test?
Students who have learned Chinese before (at home/high school/study abroad programs) and wish to continue their Chinese study at Brown. Students who wish to resume Chinese study after being absent for one semester or more.
Students who have no prior knowledge of Chinese and wish to take CHIN0100,  the first semester in the fall semester, need not to take the test.

2. Test Components
The placement test includes four components: Online survey about your background, a short essay, the written  test, and an Oral Interview.

3. About the written test (scheduled at noon, 9/02 @ Barus & Holley)
This placement test is for students of all proficiency levels, from the beginning to the most advanced. Therefore, you are not expected to know the answer to every question. It's fine to leave some questions blank. No need to guess the answers.

There are four parts in this test: multiple choices on grammar, multiple choices on vocabulary, and multiple choices on reading comprehension. You have 60 minutes maximum to finish this test. Before you take the test, there is a questionnaire below about your previous Chinese learning experiences.

4. About the Oral Interview
The oral interview will take 10-15 minutes. All the interviews will be conducted right after the written test on 09/02.  If you have any schedule conflicts, please email 焦老师, the coordinator of the Chinese program liwei_jiao@brown.edu.

This test is designed to test students at various levels, so you are not expected to know the answer to every question. Note that it is not uncommon that we recommend someone who has taken two or more years of Chinese in high school to start from Basic Chinese at Brown University. The recommendations we make based on this placement test are not final. You and your instructor should discuss whether you are in the appropriate level and make necessary adjustment should either party see the needs to do so during the shopping period.

5. Academic Integrity
The Brown Academic Code, as described in the Student Handbook, applies in this placement test as in all other courses at the university. When you take the online test, do not use any supporting materials (e.g. textbooks, dictionaries, cellphones, laptops) other than your own knowledge.  The purpose of the place test is to find out your current proficiency in Chinese so that we can place you into the appropriate course.  If you break the honor code, you will be misplaced in the wrong course, and your learning will be negatively affected.
