The Callegory Presents... Diadromous: From the Valley to the Bay Fellowship

APPLY BELOW! Applications are due by February 29th, 2024.

Diadromous: An Arts Activism Fellowship
The word diadromous, our arts activism fellowship’s namesake, is a word defined here as “migratory between saltwater and freshwater.” It is the relationship of the two that sparks immense fertility and biological diversity along California’s waterways, and embodies the spirit of intentional cross-pollination and bioregional organizing that this fellowship will be made of.

The Diadromous Fellowship is a six-month, hybrid in-person and virtual fellowship program that will bring together participants from the Central Valley and the Bay Area for a series of retreats and decentralized organizing for social, environmental, and economic justice in the places we call home. Through an individual and collective arts activism practice, we seek to become stewards of our communities as well as strategize the future of our shared ecologies.

Fellows will take part in:

- Three (3) in-person retreats made up of relating to:
  • The River (Yokuts territory/Stockton, CA from May 24-27)
  • The Bay (Huichun territory/Oakland, CA from June 21-24) and
  • The Confluence (Location and time TBD, in July)
- Monthly virtual gatherings from August to October
- Being trained to use The Exposition as a movement storyteller in the Callegory
- Engaging our collective process to develop The Climax, the in-progress poster about California as a metaphor for global justice

Fellows will receive a working stipend for their time and will be expected to take part in all program activities for the entire duration of the fellowship.

We are honored that you are interested in being part of the Diadromous Arts Activism Fellowship! You'll need to submit a creative offering as well as fill out this form for your application to be considered complete.

How will this experience support you and the work you do regarding the issues facing your community? What do you hope to take home?

An example might be "The effort of the Winnemem Wintu tribe to restore their ancestral salmon runs, because..." If you're not familiar with the Beehive's work, take a look around beehivecollective.org before answering this question. Learn more about the Callegory here.

IV. Personal identity
We invite you here to share some aspects of your personal identity - whatever you would like us to know to support our goal of convening young people with first-person stories from the frontlines of the climate crisis in California. You may wish to share your racial identity, age, gender, religion, sexuality, nationality, or any other ways by which you identify.

Here's an example: "There are many names that collectively shape my voice; a Filipino-American queer man of color, an arts activist drawing the connections between social crises and systemic injustice. I am guided by my love of characters and narrative, both intimate and universal. Symbolically, the archetype of detective is embedded in my soul - and my mystery finds me in drought-induced California, fighting water privatization and fossil fuels in a scenescape of media mirages and churning, chaotic industry."
How would you describe your personal identity? *
V. Previous experience
In putting together this Fellowship cohort, we are looking for a diversity of needed interests and skills. You will be trained in all of these areas, and we know we'll be able to go deeper together if certain skills and orientations are held within the team.

Please highlight your interest or experience in any or all of the following. Specific examples would be most helpful.

Your answer does not have to relate to your work on climate justice. Breadth is not prioritized over depth - you can feel comfortable filling out one, two, or all three skills boxes below. We're interested in how these skills are held collectively, not necessarily within each individual.
Arts and storytelling
The major focus of this fellowship is on mobilizing arts and storytelling skills for creative action. What arts practices are you bringing with you to this learning journey (music, poetry/spoken word, visual arts, dance, etc.)? What would you like to learn? You may wish to include links to your existing work, if available.
Organizing and action-planning skills
Please describe your previous experience with and/or excitement about action planning and community organizing. How have you been part of making change in your community? This could include lobbying, organizing, campaigning, performance-based activism and non-violent direct action. And what would you like to learn?
Community and coalition building
During the Fellowship we will be working closely together, accountable both to one another and to the broader climate justice movement. We believe our power is grounded in relationship-building, and as such are looking for fellows with strengths in building and nurturing community across diverse identities. What have you learned from collaboration in your life and work? How do you respond to conflict? What value do you see in working across lines of difference?
VI. Availability
Fellows will be announced in late March, with the first convening at the end of May: arriving Friday May 24 through departing on Monday May 27, in Stockton, California (Yokuts territory). The second convening is Friday June 21 through Monday June 24, in Oakland, California (Ohlone territory). Supporting the Winnemem Wintu-led Run4Salmon, we will be together for part of July. This convening will conclude the in-person programming of our time together. Three monthly virtual sessions will close out the fellowship, from August to September to our final session in October.

In between gatherings we will also have video calls every other week, commit to a sustained arts and writing practice. You will want to set aside 3-5 hours per week for these Fellowship activities, balancing an individual arts activism practice with a collective arts activism practice.

We recognize that this is a large commitment, and that flexibility of school and work schedules is difficult to anticipate, but we are looking for fellows who will make every effort to get the most out of this special opportunity to learn and grow together. If you are not sure if you can make all these dates, we still encourage you to apply, and describe your situation below.
Availability for in-person gatherings *
Can you commit to attending all six gatherings, as described above? There are three in-person gatherings, two of them learning/practice retreats and the third an application of what we've learned so far. Following that, there are three virtual gatherings to close the fellowship's programming.

If not, please describe in the "Other" box.
