Trans Youth Justice Council application (deadline: 1/8/20)
Thank you for your interest in the Trans Youth Justice Council (TYJC)! This program is open to any trans, nonbinary, or gender nonconforming young person ages 16-22 who lives in or near Milwaukee and has an interest in making the world a better place for trans youth.

The TYJC is a youth leadership development program based in a social justice model. Our goals are to help you learn skills to create social change for trans youth and to help build community. The program involves an 6 session curriculum, for which you will paid $15/hour for your participation. The program will take place at Diverse & Resilient at 2439 N Holton St., which is wheelchair accessible and has a gender neutral restroom. We will provide money for bus fare or gas and can also help arrange for transportation. Meals and snacks will be provided.

The program meets the following dates:

Saturday, January 11: 1-5 PM
Wednesday, January 22: 5-7 PM
Wednesday, February 5: 5-7 PM
Wednesday, February 19: 5- 7 PM
Wednesday, March 11: 5-7 PM
Saturday, March 28: 1- 5 PM

If you're not sure you can make all of the sessions, please re-apply next year.

As part of the program, you will design a social action project in your school, community, or workplace. It’s up to you, but projects could include things like designing a sex education program for trans youth, creating a guide for teachers to respect pronouns in the classrooms, or making a social media campaign about race and trans identity. We will provide support and check-ins after the group sessions. You will also be paid $15/hour for working on your social action project. Between the 6 sessions of the curriculum and completing your social action project, you can get paid up to a total of 50 hours during the 2020 spring semester

You do NOT need parent/guardian permission to participate in the TYJC.

The Trans Youth Council is a project between GSAFE, the WI Trans Health Coalition, and UW Madison. The program is facilitated by Chris Barcelos (https://chrisbarcelos.com) and Sergio Domínguez (https://trl.education.wisc.edu/people/) and Yante Turner (https://www.diverseandresilient.org/staff/yante-turner/).
