Call of Expression of Interest to join the Panel of Experts for Circostrada SPARK Research Lab on Fair Practices and Equitable Working Conditions

SPARK Research Lab supports Circostrada’s ongoing commitment on advancing Fair Practices and Equitable Working Conditions in contemporary circus and outdoor arts. Between 2024 and 2026 a series of consultations and desk research will be undertaken, engaging key sector stakeholders and Circostrada members at different points of their career at all stages of research design, data collection, analysis and dissemination. The collaborative approach aims to empower those engaged in the process, strengthen data relevant and make proposals to policy makers that reflect the reality of the sector across Europe.

The research will be led by Dr. Matina Magkou, Researcher, Lecturer and Consultant in Cultural and Creative Industries, Cultural policies and international cultural cooperation.

The Panel of Experts will play the following role:

  • Guiding research scope and relevance ensuring the research questions align with pressing issues in the sector.

  • Validating methodology to ensure that it is ethical and inclusive.

  • Providing sector and country-specific insights according to their expertise (perspectives on labor practices, existing policy gaps, good practices).

  • Sharing lived experiences that reveal the state of the art regarding working conditions in the sector and provide valuable input for informing policy recommendations

  • Supporting the formulation of realistic and actionable policy recommendations.

  • Contributing to the dissemination of findings and policy recommendations.

We are looking into putting together a Panel of experts composed of 10 Circostrada members, and 5 external artists and cultural professionals from the fields of contemporary circus and outdoor arts as well as policy experts and researchers from the 27 European Union member states.  Please feel free to share the call for experts with colleagues or professionals who could contribute valuable insights to the research and policy recommendations. Our goal is to create a panel that is as representative as possible in terms of geographical diversity, gender balance, professional activities, experience levels, and the sub-disciplines represented by Circostrada members. The working sessions will be conducted in English; therefore, the ability to communicate effectively in this language is required.

Beyond the selected panel members, all Circostrada members - including coming from a non-EU country -  will have an opportunity to contribute to the project in some capacity.

The commitment of panel members includes the following:

  • Participating in at least three of the five foreseen online meetings throughout the duration of the research project. The first meeting is on Friday, 7th of March 2025 from 3pm to 5pm. The remaining meetings calendar will be agreed together with the group.

  • Undertaking light desk research in a local context to identify key documents and resource people.

  • Provide feedback in written format at various moments of the research design and implementation.

Circostrada members will have the opportunity to join a Collaborative Input Session led by Matina Magkou in the frame of the Network’s Annual General Meeting in Marseille. Attendance at this meeting is not a prerequisite for joining the group.

Apply until the 7th of February 2025, midnight CET by using the following questionnaire.
