Palestinian artists Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme engage in a practice that explores “being in/becoming the negative” as a method of resisting colonial capture. Through a range of sound, image, installation, and performance, their installation Prisoners of Love: Until the Sun of Freedom explores how former political prisoners have used music, art, and poetry as forms of individual expression and collective survivance to systems of incarceration. “Enemy of the Sun” (1970), by Palestinian poet Samih Al-Qasim, foregrounds this installation and materially represents the connections between Black political prisoners in the United States and Palestinian political prisoners.
In this guided tour and collage workshop, participants will directly engage with “Enemy of the Sun” alongside the artistic methods of Abbas and Abou-Rahme to create their own visual interpretations of “being in the negative.” Through conversation and artmaking, participants will be invited to reflect on what the exhibition has to teach us about intervening in our present moment.
