Description of the Study and Your Part in It Dr. Michelle Cook is inviting you to take part in a research study. Michelle is an Associate Professor of Science Education at Clemson University. Dr. Alex Chow and Dr. J.C. Chong are also collaborating on the study. The purpose of this research is to evaluate how your participation in the collecting data on fireflies affects your knowledge about and attitudes toward science and the environment. Your part in the study will be to: 1. Read background information about fireflies and learn how to count them in the field. 2. Collect and submit data on firefly abundance at your field site. 3. Complete a survey that asks you for demographic information and your knowledge about and attitudes toward science and the environment. It will take you about 1.0 hour to participate in the study. Risks and Discomforts We do not know of any risks or discomforts to you in this research study. Possible Benefits We do not know of any way you would benefit directly from taking part in this study. However, this research may help us to understand how to better engage the public in scientific research. Protection of Privacy and Confidentiality We will do everything we can to protect your privacy and confidentiality. We will not tell anybody outside of the research team that you were in this study or what information we collected about you in particular. Your data from the surveys will be stored on a secure server. As soon as the data is compiled into a spreadsheet, your identifying information will be removed. In addition, your data will be erased from the secure server. Choosing to Be in the Study You do not have to be in this study. You may choose not to take part and you may choose to stop taking part at any time. You will not be punished in any way if you decide not to be in the study or to stop taking part in the study.
