Comprehensive immigration reform legislation must strengthen the family immigration system, eliminate the immigration backlogs and ensure a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.

Today, many American families must wait decades to reunite with their loved ones. In 2012, 4.3 million people were caught in the backlogs, and more than 1.8 million were from Asian countries.

Immigration is about families, including brothers and sisters and children even when they turn 21 years of age. Limiting the family visa program will shut the doors on families being reunited and millions of Americans will face the unbearable pain of separation.

Grandma Kim is 84 years old and a US citizen. She lives in Los Angeles and petitioned for her married son earlier this year. Due to the backlogs, Grandma Kim will have to wait over 11 years to be reunited with him. She will be 95 years old before her son can join her. Grandma Kim worries every day that she may pass away before she can see him again.

The increasingly engaged Asian American electorate expressed clear support for the passage of comprehensive immigration reform. Family-based immigration is key to strengthening our nation’s prosperity and success.

We demand that you stand up for American families and stop all threats to the family immigration system.

Sincerely,
