2017 Umstead 100 Volunteer Pacers

Hello volunteer pacers!! Pacing is a special volunteer duty and I have the pleasure of coordinating the volunteer pacers again.

Race date: April 1-2, 2017

Volunteer pacers will be available to ANY runner on a first-come, first-serve basis.
(Private pacers do not need to sign up with me and are not considered volunteers).

After completing 50 miles, U100 allows pacing of runners until they finish the full 100 miles. Pacing will begin around 6PM Saturday night and will continue to 8AM Sunday morning. For many runners, having a pacer for their final lap(s) means the difference between successfully completing their 100 mile goal and not finishing. The greatest need for pacers is generally between 10PM Saturday and 4AM Sunday. Basically, as a pacer your key responsibilities are to provide company and support to your runner - they have a lot of miles on their legs and need some help remembering to eat, drink and keep moving. We need pacers of all abilities, as some of the faster runners will also ask for a pacer. Most runners will take between 2.5 and 4 hours to complete a lap.The main thing is that you need to be able to easily cover 12.5 hilly miles. We will probably hold a pacer training run or two for practice and to answer any questions you may have. Before the race I will assign arrival times based on your availability and how many laps you want to pace.

AGAIN, please note: Volunteer pacers will be available to ANY runner on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you are dedicating yourself to a specific runner, you do not need to sign up, and you will not be considered a volunteer by the race.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at 919-880-3147 or via email elizabeth.werner@ncdenr.gov.

Thank you very much for being a volunteer pacer! I look forward to seeing my veteran pacers and meeting new ones.

Elizabeth Werner
