Momentum in the natural capital space has been steadily building over the last several years. In order to provide a snapshot of the progress made, and a foundation for the continued measurement of growth, development and uptake, the Coalition is developing a natural capital ‘annual review’.
 
The review will focus on the analysis of this set of survey questions, which will be widely distributed among the Coalition network, and within the networks of our many hundreds of global partners.
 
This survey hopes to provide a sense of the ways in which natural capital approaches are being applied, what decisions assessments are influencing, and how familiar the concept has become among organizations. We also hope to identify the perceived barriers involved in adopting a natural capital approach, and the action necessary in order to vault these barriers.

Natural Capital thinking changes the way we think about our relationship with nature. By looking at how we depend on nature and natural systems, as well as how we are impacting on their health;  we move beyond just measuring to understanding the relative importance and worth, or value, so that we can inform decisions and actually deliver change at a systems level.

We define natural capital as another term for the stock of renewable and non-renewable resources (e.g. plants, animals, air, water, soils, minerals) that combine to yield a flow of benefits to people.
