Our Environment in Transition

The Mayoral shift from Bloomberg to De Blasio has been framed as a narrative of New York City in transition. Many things are coalescing or reaching a breaking point typified by De Blasio’s framing a “Tale of Two Cities.” Is now a unique opportunity to address inequality, injustice and unsustainability? Is this a moment of transition? If so, for whom? Or, is this just more of the same? This moment is rife with questions.

Using New York City’s electoral transition, we are examining this moment to consider transitions and their broader impact on people and environments. We begin applying these questions to New York City and beyond to provoke, challenge, inspire your thoughts and work. We are looking forward to the conversation on March 14th.

The Nature, Ecology and Society Network is an interdisciplinary group at the City University of New York (CUNY) of researchers, activists and other colleagues who work at the intersections of people and environments. We continue the tradition of creating a space for interdisciplinary conversation at NES 2014 by requesting proposals from within and outside CUNY and allied students, artists, activists, designers, journalists, musicians, performers, filmmakers, scholars in the humanities and natural, physical and social sciences.
