Individual, Candidate/Elected Official, and Organizational Support for the Sensible Opioid Spending Pledge

The opioid crisis has caused unimaginable pain and loss across our nation, leaving individuals, families, and entire communities struggling to recover. In response, significant settlement funds have been allocated to address this crisis. However, these funds must be used wisely and transparently to truly make a difference.

As Elected Officials and concerned citizens, we have the power to ensure that these funds are directed where they are most needed—towards care, support, and the advancement of treatment for those directly impacted by substance use. We urge you to support the pledge.

This is how the Candidates' Pledge reads.

Pledge Commitments:

  1. Responsible Spending:

    • I pledge to allocate opioid settlement funds with the utmost integrity, funding measures that are related to nondiscriminatory services, care and the advancement of care for people who struggle with substance use and their impacted family members.

  2. Transparent Spending:

    • I pledge to allocate opioid settlement funds with the utmost accountability. Detailed reports on fund allocation and spending will be made publicly accessible, ensuring full transparency in how these funds are used.

  3. Centering Directly Impacted Individuals:

    • I pledge to involve directly impacted people, including impacted family members, people in recovery, and active substance users, in decision-making processes. Their lived experiences and insights are invaluable and will guide our policies and funding decisions.

    • I will establish advisory boards and committees that include these stakeholders to ensure their voices are central in oversight of the settlement funds.

    • I am committed to ensuring the directly impacted community members who are providing care services will have priority in all funding opportunities.

  4. No Supplantation of Funds:

    • I pledge that opioid settlement funds will not be used to replace or supplant existing funding sources. These funds are intended to provide an influx of new funds in order to turn the overdose crisis around.

  5. Opposition to Punitive Measures:

    • I pledge that the opioid settlement funds will be used for support, not punishment. No opioid settlement funds will be utilized for punitive measures. The focus will be on care, support, and treatment rather than punishment. We must approach the overdose crisis with compassion and a public health perspective, rather than through criminalization.
