Request for Excused Absences
At Smith Elementary, we recognize that students may be absent due to travel opportunities or other educational experiences. Parents may request that these absences be excused. Absences may be approved for five days for travel within the US and up to eight days for international travel.
Family events such as weddings, reunions, vacations, etc. will not be considered excused unless there is an educational component or experience associated with the trip. We recognize that not all family events or vacations may fall under the category of an "educational opportunity" and anticipate that some students may have unexcused absences.
Please complete the following information and submit the form to Ms. Hancock, Principal. (If you have more than one child, you only need to complete one form. Please list all student names.)
In order for educational trips to be excused, these requests must be submitted to Ms. Hancock and the procedures below followed.
1. Please complete the following information and submit prior to travel. (If you have more than one child, you only need to complete one form. Please list all student names.)
2. Within five days of the student's return to school, verification of learning through an educational journal is to be submitted to Ms. Hancock. This journal will need to provide strong supporting evidence that the trip reinforced the curriculum under study in the current grade of the child.
3. All work missed due to the absences is to be submitted to the classroom teacher as stated in our parent/student handbook.
Once Ms. Hancock has received the verification of learning through an educational journal, she will determine (based on the student's work) how many days will be excused. This information will be recorded in Powerschool and you can verify the decision (excused or unexcused) by checking the attendance within ten days of completing Step 2 above.
Please remember our goal is to maintain an uninterrupted learning process for our students! If you have questions, please contact Ms. Hancock through email:

What is the reason for this absence?
Please describe the educational activities or opportunities your child will experience during this absence. (These might include visits to museums, historical sites, cultural events, etc.)
