There are four ways Sigma Xi members and chapters can engage in this citizen science project (Soil Moisture Active Passive mission): http://scistarter.com/SMAP:
1) as a participant;
2) as a team leader and host for the instruments required for this activity;
3) as a mentor to a local team or individuals (SciStarter will work with Sigma Xi to find a local team or individuals looking for mentors OR you can certainly mentor/lead a team of your choice...local boy/girl scout troop, sports team, classroom, your own family, etc).
4) as a Community Lab Space to help train, mentor and host citizen scientists involved in SMAP

Option 6

NASA and SciStarter will provide a "kit" for one team per state. The kit will include some materials to be used with this project including a heat lamp and graduated cylinder. It will NOT include a balance needed to weigh the soil. Many teams will still lack access to these instruments. Would you be interested in helping in the following ways: *

I'd like to loan instruments to a local team (one I am paired with or one I create). Instruments may possibly include a digital balance, heat lamp, and/or a graduated cylinder.

This is a pilot partnership between SciStarter and Sigma Xi. We are very interested in hearing any suggestions you might have. Our goal, through this SMAP project as our first pilot project, is to help citizen scientists find Sigma Xi chapters like yours to serve as mentors, collaborators, or public lab spaces. We hope this is the start of an ongoing partnership.
