MIT Employees Need Real Inflation Relief NOW!
On October 20th, MIT announced a pretax one-time payment of $1,500 to some MIT employees on campus from central resources. This bonus is a welcome reprieve during a time of record-high inflation in which we are facing skyrocketing costs in all aspects of our lives, from groceries and rent to childcare and healthcare.

Times are tough for all of us. More work keeps falling onto our plates, while it costs more just to put food on our tables. In September, inflation was 8.2%, meaning that a salary of $50,000 is worth $4,100 less than it was last year.

To this end, we are calling on MIT leadership to use central resources to grant a reasonable, across-the-board cost of living raise of 6% for all employees (as opposed to merit-based) to begin to address the financial hardship we face and show us that MIT values our contributions to the Institute.

For many of us, turnover has been rampant due to uncompetitve pay & short staffing. As a result, we are often taking on the work of 2 or more employees to keep the Institute running. In that vein, we are also calling for renewed urgency in hiring to ensure sustainable workload and retention.

This petition was initiated by the MIT Student Worker Alliance, a coalition of MIT undergraduate students, graduate workers, employees, and contract workers across campus. Questions can be sent to studentworkeralliancemit@gmail.com!
