Seeking 8-10 actors of high school age (19th grade and up) and older for THE ELEPHANT MAN by Bernard Pomerance. This is a period drama that tells the story of Joseph Merrick, known for his severe rare skin and bone diseases. He was first exhibited at a freak show under the stage name "The Elephant Man", and then went to live at the London Hospital after meeting Dr. Frederick Treves. During his friendship with Treves, Merrick slowly evolves from an object of pity to an urbane gentleman, desperate to be recognized as a man like any other.
The actor playing Joseph Merrick(18+ only) will NOT be wearing prosthetics, but must be an excellent mover and comfortable telling this story by holding his body and face in various positions. The actor should also be comfortable wearing only underwear for a few scenes. Fun fact - this role was previously played by David Bowie and Bradley Cooper on Broadway. The 1980 film adaptation featured Anthony Hopkins as Merrick, and was directed by David Lynch.
The actor playing Mrs. Kendal,(18+ only) an actress who befriends Joseph, must be comfortable with either partial or suggested nudity. The actor playing Treves will only be 18 or older.
All characters speak with a British dialect.
Rehearsals will be held primarily Sunday - Thursday evenings. Fridays and Saturdays will be off.
