Arthur G. McCann Memorial Lecture            "Getting to Good Grief: Coping with the Effects"

Today it can almost seem as if each day brings with it stories of or actual experiences of loss. This presentation will offer clarification of the meaning of loss and of the grief that follows. The expectation of grief in our lives and the meaning for counselors and educators will be discussed. Grief has many similarities, but it also varies with age and may be expressed differently in different cultures.

Rob Stevenson is a recently retired Mercy College graduate counseling professor. He has been both a classroom teacher and school counselor who designed and taught the first high school death education course in 1972. He also worked with individuals with PTSD in the 88th NY Guard after 9/11.

***Two Continuing Education Contact Hours will be offered to NYS Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHC)

Participants will:
 > Learn the current thinking and history of grief and bereavement
 > Identify warning signs of pathological grief
 > Acquire three coping strategies to process grief in a healthy way
